Shirabyoshi Song and Dance Performance and Talk
Shirabyoshi were female performers that selected waka suitable for the occasion without preparation and sang them as they danced. Waka is a type of Japanese poetry containing 31 syllables in total which served to culturally refine aristocrats since ancient times and was a means to express ideas and emotions. Dances performed by shirabyoshi makes people think about the roots of Japanese performing arts and also highly resemble the dances of goddesses that appear in Japanese mythology. It is also mysterious to see that shirabyoshi danced while dressed in men’s costumes. Guests will watch shirabyoshi singing and dancing, allowing them to experience Japanese sense of beauty revealed through waka as well as the sounds of ancient Japanese words. In addition, guests can also experience what it is like to sing a waka themselves.
Although the art of the shirabyoshi fell into decline as time went on, part of it was later inherited by performing arts such as the popular art of Noh theater. Furthermore, there are only a small amount of historical materials, such as books and paintings that document the shirabyoshi. Imayo Shirabyoshi Kenkyusho is attempting to bring back the illusionary art of shirabyoshi dance based on the newest academic research.
