Samurai Experience—A performance of Kyoto Yamauchi Ha Iai Battojutsu and test cutting demonstration
Kyoto Yamauchi Ha originated from Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu, an iaido (sword drawing) school founded by Hasegawa Eishin, a man who was known to have mastered many martial arts. Our “Samurai Experience” consists of a performance of iai battojutsu (sword drawing techniques) and test cutting demonstration by Kazuo Ichise, soke of the Kyoto yamauchi Ha Iai Battojutsu Toshinkai, a school which strongly carries on the practice of bringing the teachings of Yamauchi Toyotake, former viscount and grandson of Yamauchi Yodo, 15th head of the Tosa Domain, to the modern age.
Valuing etiquette, samurai practiced iai battojutsu on a daily basis. In its ultimate form, it seems that there was more to iai battojutsu than just drawing a sword. It also served as a way to psychologically win over adversaries. Since real swords are inherently lethal, it appears that samurai practiced freeing their minds from obstructive thoughts based on a spirit that becomes sound through awareness of danger. Guests will enjoy a sword drawing performance by Kazuo Ichise who has brought the knowledge of the samurai back to life in the modern age.
During the “Samurai Experience,” highlights including watching sword drawing and test cutting performances by Kazuo Ichise, a session during which guests learn about the knowledge of the samurai, an in depth talk on Japanese swords, and a Q&A session.
